Interdisciplinary activity topics relate directly to the adventures of characters in the story, and provide students with a variety of hands-on experiences. This series of activities is designed as a supplement to Paddle-to-the-Sea, a story book written by Holling Clancy Holling. Teachers may choose any or all of the activities outlined in the guide to reinforce and extend the experiences and understanding provided by the story. A chart indicates which activities relate to each chapter in the book. The interdisciplinary activity topics relate directly to the experiences of characters in the story, and include Great Lakes geography, the hydrologic cycle, animal tracks, beaver ponds, fish anatomy, estuaries, forestry and tree use, food webs, locks, shipping, weather folktales, and ecosystems. The activities provide students with a variety of hands-on experiences like model building, role-playing, story writing, carving, and drawing. Accompanying the guide are worksheets and answer keys, discussion questions, and extension activities.
