Are there any Islands in the Great Lakes that are not owned by either Canada or the United States?
from Noelle in Somers Point, NJ, Age 10

According to Karen Vigmostad, an expert on Great Lakes islands, it turns out that all of the islands in the Great Lakes do indeed fall under the jurisdiction of either the United States or Canada. Because each of the five Great Lakes are wholly contained within the territory of the U.S. and Canada, all the land (above and underwater) also falls within that range.

The actual owner of an island, however, can be anyone in the world, no matter their nationality. So an American can own a Canadian island, a Canadian can own an American island, an African can be the owner of many islands, a German can own a Canadian island that's next to an American island owned by an Australian, and so on.
