Minnesota Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (7/31) The goal of the program is to assure a safe and healthy aquatic recreational environment by informing the water-going public about risk of contracting water-borne diseases. The program collects samples from 39 Lake Superior beaches and analyzes those samples for water-borne diseases and human health risks.
Great Lakes Beach and Pier Safety (7/30) The Great Lakes Beach and Pier Safety Task Force formed to bring together as many resources as possible to help educate the public on how to enjoy the Great Lakes safely.

Illinois residents still waiting for answers on asbestos at Lake Michigan The Asbestos & Mesothelioma Center (7/16) It was almost 11 years ago when the media first mentioned the presence of asbestos fibers at Illinois Beach State Park, which runs along a six-mile stretch of Lake Michigan. But is the beach safe today? The term "asbestos" has been given to six naturally occurring mineral fibers that have been used for commercial purposes. Today, use of asbestos in the United States is regulated but, contrary to common belief, it has never been banned.

Great Lakes Legislative Caucus GLIN's July 2008 Site of the Month (7/1) The Great Lakes Legislative Caucus is a nonpartisan group of legislators from eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. Ongoing services provided to state and provincial lawmakers include state and federal legislative trackers, regularly produced newsletters, and a Web site with information on the Great Lakes and who represents it. The caucus also has been involved in specific Great Lakes issues, including the push for an interstate compact to better manage the lakes.
