Wetlands in the 21st Century: Altered Landscapes and Changing Climates

Wisconsin Wetlands Association will convene members of the regional wetland community for its 13th annual conference, Jan. 31 - Feb. 1 in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, to discuss the latest in wetland science, management, restoration and protection issues as they relate to anthropogenic alterations that affect wetlands.

Isle Royale National Park includes a group of islands and the surrounding waters of Lake Superior. This striking image from a NASA satellite shows the deep blue waters of the lake around the main island and the long parallel ridges formed from lava flows some 1.2 billion years ago running the 45-mile length of Isle Royale.

2008 Great Lakes Summer Student Fellowship Program

John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon

The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon commemorates the life of John Beargrease, the son of a Chippewa chief who delivered mail by dog sled along Lake Superior’s rugged North Shore in the late 19th century. The event kicks off in Duluth, Minnesota on January 27.

National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB)

The annual NOSB competitions provide an educational forum for high school students to excel in math and science and receive national recognition for their diligence and talents. Great Lakes competitions will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Stony Brook, N.Y. (Feb. 9); and in Milwaukee, Wis., and Pittsburgh, Pa. (Feb. 23). The competitions are open to the public.
