Learn About Water Resource Management at Lake and Stream
Leaders Institute
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Many of Michigan’s 36,000 miles
of streams and 11,000 lakes are facing pressure for competing human uses. Resource
managers, decision makers, homeowners and other interested residents can learn
about lake management issues and their implications by completing the five-part
Lake and Stream Leaders Institute this spring and summer.
Set to begin May 16 at the McMullen Conference Center near Grayling, Mich., the
institute will continue July 30-Aug. 1 at the Kellogg Biological Station near
Hickory Corners, Mich., and conclude Oct. 2 at the Bengel Wildlife Center in
Bath, Mich.
Participants will take part in classroom and field-based sessions designed to
help them better understand local water resource management planning and
program implementation. Topics covered include watershed management, lake and
stream ecology, environmental education, leadership, and working with local and
state government.
Participants are also required to complete an applied project to receive a
certificate of completion. Projects may include organizing public forums or
educational programs related to lakes and streams, initiating projects that
protect or promote water quality, assisting in local water resource management
activities or conducting water quality monitoring studies.
Once they’ve completed the program, participants can become part of the
institute’s alumni program to promote communication, continued learning
and service opportunities.
Applications for the institute are due April 30. Participation is limited to 30
people. The registration fee, which includes all meals as well as lodging at
Kellogg Biological Station, is $250 per person or $150 for full-time students.
