IISG Salutes Phil Mankin and Welcomes New Research Coordinator
Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) announces the retirement of Phil Mankin, and at the same time, welcomes John Epifanio, who will take his place as research coordinator.
Joining IISG as research coordinator six years ago, Mankin has taken on additional responsibilities throughout his time with the program. Beginning in 2006, he served as interim director for more than a year.  For the past year, he has been the program’s interim associate director. Mankin has been a wildlife researcher at the University of Illinois for 25 years.
“Phil will be greatly missed,” said Brian Miller, IISG director. “He has championed personnel and budget issues that have brought stability to the program for years to come. And he has always been a source of sound judgment.”
IISG’s new research coordinator is no stranger to the program. Early in his career, John Epifanio was an IISG Knauss Fellow. Since 2001, he has been a molecular ecologist at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS). There, Epifanio has served in a number of administrative roles, including director of the Center for Aquatic Ecology.
“John has been the Sea Grant contact to INHS for many years,” said Miller. “He also led the Fisheries Leadership Institute, which resulted in some great training opportunities for our clients.”
Epifanio will join IISG on January 1, 2009 and will split his time between IISG and INHS. “I appreciative that INHS is partnering with us to provide a research coordination function,” added Miller.
