The OEC is a statewide environmental advocacy group with a full-time staff of 14 and a 20-member Board of Directors dedicated to building a better place for Ohioans to live, work, and play. The OEC staff advocates for a cleaner, greener Ohio by interacting with the state legislature and executive agencies, local watershed groups, concerned citizens, other environmental and conservation groups, local and county governments, and non-traditional allies.
Position description:  The Water Program Associate is responsible for developing and executing statewide advocacy efforts on critical issues pertaining to Ohio’s watersheds and Lake Erie, such as the effects of stormwater, agricultural pollution, point source discharges, and the destruction of streams and wetlands.  The Associate must provide leadership and expertise on the protection and restoration of water quality by coordinating and carrying out message development, policy research, media contact, lobbying plans, campaign design, and outreach strategies in cooperation with other OEC staff.  The Associate shares responsibility for project funding, such as writing proposals, reports, and concept papers, researching new funding sources, and ensuring that program deadlines are met.  The Associate will help to build the OEC’s network of partners, including regional councils of watershed organizations, government employees, farmers, industry, and fellow environmentalists.  The Associate will also work with the advocacy and development teams to develop the OEC as an organization through presentations, relationships with members and prospective members, and participation in fundraising and membership activities.
Qualifications:  The Water Program Associate must have strong leadership qualities and experience in the public interest sector, or equivalent experience, with demonstrated skills in advocacy, outreach, and policy development.  The Associate should have substantial experience in a demanding work environment, and good communication and team-building skills.  The Associate must possess the willingness and ability to travel and occasionally work evening and weekend hours, strong writing and speaking skills, proficiency in word processing and use of the Internet, energy and self-motivation.  The minimum qualifications shall include graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelors Degree.  An advanced degree, extensive work experience, and/or professional accreditation are preferred.  Knowledge of Ohio—environmental and economic issues, natural history, and politics—is highly desirable.
Salary and benefits:  The salary range is commensurate with experience, with a range of $28,000 to $42,000.  The position offers excellent benefits including paid health, dental, vision and life insurance, employer-matched retirement fund, and paid vacation, family, sick, and holiday leave.
