Invasive Species – Legislation

Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Susan Collins (R-ME) and Reps. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) and Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) are seeking co-sponsors for legislation to reduce the risk of harm from aquatic invasive species to U.S. ecosystems and natural resources. The National Aquatic Invasive Species Act of 2005 (S. 770 and H.R. 1591 and 1592) provides for rapid response when new invaders are discovered, for controlling those species that are established in our waters, for researching pathways of introduction, and for the development of prevention and control technologies.  Contacts:  Allegra Cangelosi with the Northeast-Midwest Institute (202/464-4007) and Joy Mulinex with the Great Lakes Task Force (202/224-1211).

Manufacturing Study – Letter

Senators Jack Reed (D-RI), Susan Collins (R-ME), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) are seeking signatures on a letter that asks the Commerce Department to fund a National Academies study on the challenges facing U.S. manufacturing.  Some particular dilemmas that require more clarification before effective actions can be planned are the relationships between global competitiveness and a secure defense industrial base; between the desire for low-cost goods for consumers and the desire for high-paying jobs; and the differing needs of large and small businesses.   The letter’s signature deadline is June 16.  Contact:  Kris Sarri with the Senate Task Force on Manufacturing (202/224-0606).

Advanced Technology Program – Letter

Senators Carl Levin (D-MI) and Mike DeWine (R-OH) are circulating a letter that asks appropriators to support $146 million in fiscal 2006 for the Advanced Technology Program.  ATP is an industry-led, competitive, and cost-shared program that provides grants to support research and development of high-risk, cutting-edge technologies with broad commercial potential and societal benefits.  The program enables U.S. companies to develop the next generation of breakthrough technologies.  The signature deadline is June 14.  Contact:  Kris Sarri with the Senate Task Force on Manufacturing (202/224-0606).

High Performance Defense Manufacturing – Letter

Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) is seeking signatures on a letter requesting $5 million in appropriations for the High Performance Defense Manufacturing Technology Research and Development Program that was accepted in the fiscal 2006 Defense Authorization Act.  As European and Asian firms continue to develop advanced technologies, the program will help U.S. defense manufacturers preserve and produce cutting-edge technologies.  Contact:  Karin Ezbiansky Pavese with Senator Lieberman (202/224-4041).
