Great Lakes mayors will meet this week in Chicago to discuss bi-national restoration strategies.  Speakers include Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, Wisconsin Governor James Doyle, Environmental Protection Administration Administrator Michael Leavitt, and Reps. Rahm Emmanuel (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL).  The July 15-16 conference will be held at the Hilton Chicago.  Contact:  Dave Ullrich with the Great Lakes Cities Initiative (312/201-4516).

The Senate Task Force on Manufacturing on Tuesday, July 13, will host a briefing by the National Academy of Public Administration (
NAPA) on its recent report on the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).  In the report’s first part, released last year, NAPA reviewed the challenges faced by small manufacturers and the services available to help them meet those challenges. The report’s new section assesses the MEP business model and whether alternative business models would help MEP better serve small and medium-sized manufacturers.  The July 13 briefing will run from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in 236 Russell Senate Office Building.

The House last week passed the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research Act (H.R. 1856), sponsored by Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI).  The legislation specifically includes the
Great Lakes as part of the federal research program for causes and solutions on hypoxia and harmful algal blooms, and it authorizes $2 million for research in the Great Lakes and other fresh waters.  The bill awaits Senate action.  Contact: Joy Mulinex at the Great Lakes Task Force (202/224-1211).
