GLIN==> Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Governance Symposium -- Register Now!

Posted on behalf of Mike Donahue <mdonahue@glc.org> and Marcia Valiante

Dear Colleague:

On behalf of a consortium of U.S. and Canadian universities, we are pleased
to invite you to an upcoming symposium that will examine Great Lakes-St.
Lawrence governance -- where we have been, where we are, and where we need
to go. Key issues of the day (i.e. water diversion/export, aquatic nuisance
species, land use, toxic contamination) will be addressed and various
mechanisms (i.e. Great Lakes Charter, Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement)
will be assessed.

Titled Toward Environmental and Economic Sustainability in the Great
Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin, the symposium is set for June 21-22, 2001 on the
University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. It is the latest iteration of
the Canada-United States Interuniversity Seminar (CUSIS), a periodic
gathering of U.S. and Canadian academics (and other parties) with an
interest in issues of binational governance. CUSIS has had a remarkable
impact since the initial event in 1970. Among others, it has helped shape
the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and prompted development of the
Ecosystem Charter for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin, which was
coordinated by the Great Lakes Commission. This upcoming CUSIS event will
provide a much-needed forum for assessing the current and prospective
ability of governance arrangements to meet the challenges of environmental
and economic sustainability at the transboundary level.

This is an ideal opportunity to engage in stimulating discussion and debate
with your colleagues. The event will also provide the basis for a series of
related, multi-year activities focusing on the governance aspects of
critically important policy issues. A proceedings document that summarizes
outcomes and presents an agenda for research and action will be published.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please complete and return the registration form on or
before June 8. If you require a sleeping room, please call the Campus Inn
immediately (1-800-666-8693) and reference the Great Lakes Commission or
Group No. 3086. (Registration form available at:

This event is sponsored by the University of Michigan, University of
Windsor, State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of
Waterloo. Funding support has been generously provided by the Consulate
General of Canada - Detroit and logistical support is being provided by the
Great Lakes Commission.

We do hope to see you in Ann Arbor on June 21-22. Should you have
questions, please contact either of us via telephone or email, as noted
