COLUMBUS, OH - June 29, 2000-Stone Laboratory's John Hageman was given The
Ohio State University's annual Distinguished Staff Award June 7 at a
luncheon ceremony on the Ohio State campus. Held as the highest honor for
nonteaching employees, Hageman was one of twelve recipients selected for
their high work ethic and outstanding work contributions.

F. T. Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University's north coast campus, is
the Lake Erie research and teaching laboratory for the Ohio Sea Grant
College Program. Hageman has served as the Manager of the Lab since 1987.
As Lab Manager and Associate Extension Agent for Ohio Sea Grant, Hageman
oversees over 5000 students (grade 5 to graduate) and 70 researchers
yearly, who participate in classes and research focusing on the ecology of
Lake Erie and the Great Lakes region.

"John Hageman is one of the major reasons Stone Laboratory has gone from a
quiet little summer field station to a thriving program that is impacting
Great Lakes science and management decisions and students of all ages from
all over Ohio," says Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, Director of Stone Lab and Ohio
Sea Grant.

Along with managing the daily operation of the summer quarter classes and
providing assistance to researchers, John directs the aquatic science
workshop program, schedules conferences, and arranges facility tours.

"John's job requires constant attention, raw skill, creativity, diplomacy,
and self assurance. Add to these a strong science background and more than
20 years of experience with the interdisciplinary issue of freshwater
systems, and you have a truly talented individual who represents the
University proudly as he pursues his personal goal of exposing as many
people as possible to Lake Erie and Stone Lab," adds Dr. Rosanne Fortner,
Associate Director of Stone Lab.

Presented by Ohio State President Brit Kriwan and Associate Vice President
for Human Resources Larry Lewellen, the recipients of the Distinguished
Staff Awards were given a $1500 honorarium and a crystal trophy.
