LAKE SUPERIOR OUTFLOW TO DECREASE
>
The International Lake Superior Board of Control, under authority
granted to it by the International Joint Commission, has set the Lake
Superior outflow to 1980 cubic metres per second (m3/s) for the month
of September. This is the outflow recommended by the regulation plan
for the month of September and is a reduction from the August outflow
of 2680 m3/s.
>
This flow will be released by discharging about 1844 m3/s through the
three hydropower plants and passing most of the remaining flow through
the control structure at the head of the St Marys Rapids. The number
of gates open at the control structure will be reduced from the August
setting of four gates fully open to the equivalent of one gate half
open for September. There will be no change to the setting of gate #1
that supplies the Fishery Remedial Works.
>
During August, the water supply to Lake Superior was well below average
while the water supply to Lakes Michigan-Huron was above average.
Currently, Lake Superior is 8 centimetres (cm) above its long-term
average beginning of September level and about 13 cm below the level
recorded last year. The level of Lakes Michigan-Huron is about 58 cm
above its long-term average level and about 34 cm above the level of a
year ago. The Board will continue to monitor conditions on Lake
Superior and downstream and will advise the International Joint
Commission accordingly.

Mr. Doug Cuthbert, Environment Canada, Burlington, Ontario is the Board
Member for Canada. Mr. Dwight Beranek, Acting Deputy Division Engineer,
