NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SMALL GRANT APPLICATION PERIOD OPENS
LANSING--Applications for the 2001 Natural Heritage Program
Small Grants are being accepted by the Department of Natural
Resources for projects to be completed in 2001. Eligible
projects are those which benefit Michigan's nongame wildlife
and endangered plants, animals and their habitats.
Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded through Michigan's
Nongame Wildlife Fund, a fund supported through citizen
contributions. Individuals, groups and governmental units
are eligible to submit proposals. The application deadline
is December 1.
"These grants offer an excellent opportunity for people to
become directly involved with research, management and
educational projects relating to native nongame wildlife and
plants," said Raymond Rustem, Natural Heritage Program
Supervisor.
Project proposals need to reflect goals of the Natural
Heritage Program which are to identify, protect, manage and
restore native plants and animals, natural communities, and
other natural features, and to promote the knowledge,
enjoyment and stewardship of Michigan's native species and
ecosystems for present and future generations.
Projects funded during 2000 included restoration of a
lakeplain prairie on school property, raptor migration
studies, ultrasonic identification of flying bats, surveys
for endangered and threatened grassland bird species and the
use of Geographic Information Systems to predict
distributions of rare freshwater mussels.
All proposals must focus on nongame species and their
habitats. Projects must be directed toward public use and
public benefit. Proposals are reviewed by DNR biologists,
technical experts and advisors to the Nongame Wildlife
Program. Those proposals that include matching funds and
those directed toward threatened and endangered species
receive higher priority.
Application information is available by contacting: Natural
Heritage Grants, DNR Wildlife Division, Box 30180, Lansing,
MI 48909-7944, or on the DNR Web site at
www.dnr.state.mi.us.
