  Use of Fecal Indicators for Monitoring Water Quality:  A Hands-On Experience

 

Location:  USGS Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory, Columbus, Ohio

 

Date:  May 6 - 7, 2009

 

The Environmental Pathogens Information Network will be holding a hands-on workshop on the use of fecal indicators to assess water quality.  The purpose of this hands-on workshop is to provide current information on quantification methods for fecal bacterial indicators.  Traditional culture-based methods and rapid methods using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) will be covered.  The workshop is intended for professionals working in the area of water-quality monitoring.

 

This will be a two-day event at the USGS Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory in Columbus, Ohio and will include speaker presentations and laboratory exercises.  Topics that will be covered include:

 

  • Overview of recreational water regulations
  • Sample collection methods
  • Analytical methods for fecal indicators
    • Membrane filtration
    • Defined-substrate technology (Colilert/Enterolert)
    • qPCR
  • Quality assurance and quality control procedures
  • Data analysis and interpretation
