BEACHNET==> chlorine injection of beach sand?

Title: chlorine injection of beach sand?

Hi.

Does anyone know of any references/reports pertaining to chlorine injection of beach sand (for E. coli removal)? This suggestion has been brought forward as a means to reduce the E. coli levels in ground and ankle depth water at a particular beach here in Ontario. I am assuming, if this were practical, once injection ceased an instant recolonization of E.coli would occur......I have also suggested to the party that E. coli is the indicator only  -  I'm not sure if pathogens are affected by chlorine the same way as E. coli?? There are obvious "cons" to this (impact to fish and wildlife etc), however, any successful scenarios would be most helpful.

Thank you!

Jacqui
