I agree, numbered oranges (magic marker),
float just below the surface and are minimally affected by wind. Charles Shabica, Ph.D., P.G. President Shabica & Associates,

has been looking at this: http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/ a few more suggestions: I realize this may sound odd,
but some of the simplest experiments used marked oranges. Also, USEPA provided the beach
sanitary survey--Jump to the section on currents (page 5-4), this info
is attached and available at http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/beaches/sanitarysurvey/ In general, you might find helpful
information in your state from the United States Geological Survey offices ttp://ny.water.usgs.gov/ Also, I recommend reading research work
from Stanley Grant from UC-Irvine. Dr. Grant has written several articles
and one of his lectures was webcasted and is available online at scroll down the page until you see the

Dear Mr. Boria, Thank you for
contacting the Bureau of Environmental Health of the Ohio Department of Health.
I have been asked to respond to your question on behalf for the bureau. In the short time I
have been involved with the US EPA Beach grant program I have not entertained a
question quite like yours. Your premise sounds intriguing but I am unaware of
anyone that has made this proposal. I recently attended the Great Lakes Beach
Association meeting in Porter, I appreciate your
interest in public bathing beaches and the effort to better understand the
forces that work at these beaches to the betterment of the environment and for
better recreational spaces available to the public. If you have other
questions please contact me at the addresses below. Barry Barry J Rice RS,
