Impact of Climate Change on the Great Lakes Ecosystem - A NOAA Science
Needs Assessment Workshop to Meet Emerging Challenges
During July 29-31, 2008, NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research
Laboratory will co-host a workshop at the University of Michigan School
of Natural Resources and Environment on the University’s Central Campus,
Ann Arbor, Michigan. The title of the workshop is: “Impact of Climate
Change on the Great Lakes Ecosystem - A NOAA Science Needs Assessment
Workshop to Meet Emerging Challenges”. The overarching purpose of the
workshop is to develop a NOAA research strategy that addresses climate
change impact on Great Lakes coastal ecosystems as driven by user needs.
Workshop co-hosts include the: Cooperative Institute for Limnology and
Ecosystems Research (CILER), Great Lakes Sea Grant Network, and the NOAA
Great Lakes Regional Team.
Day 1 of the workshop, Tuesday, July 29, will feature a series of
scientific panel presentations on the current state of knowledge of
present and expected future impact of climate change on the Great Lakes
ecosystem, with prime focus on effects in coastal waters and connecting
channels. Day 2 will feature a series of stakeholder panel presentations
and Day 3 will bring together scientists and stakeholders within six
concurrent breakout sessions followed by a final joint summary session.
A public Keynote Address will also be offered on Day 1, by Dr. Henry N.
Pollack,
