BEACHNET==> cleaning up large fishkills from wetlands

we had a record number of menhaden (bunkers) kills this summer in the ny/nj estuary (raritan bay), probably due to an increase in population from a fishing ban that went into effect in 2002 ('reduction' fishing banned within 1.2 nm of shoreline)

in any event, the kills mostly happened by marinas where bluefish had cornered huge amounts of juvenile bunkers - 2 of the kills were in the hundreds of thousands to millions - the dead fish backwashed into the wetlands upstream - the stink was bad for several days, but the towns did little or no cleanup as they said they did not have the personnel or equipment to do so

if these kills are the beginning of a new trend of numerous fishkills in raritan bay, we will need to do better than that

if anyone knows how large amounts of dead fish were removed from wetlands by local dept of public works (maybe with a vacuum truck?) please let me know

Thanks
