Re: FW: Fresh water lake epidemiology studies

Hi all,

EPA just published on their recent epi studies at the Great Lakes:

Rapidly Measured Indicators of Recreational Water Quality Are Predictive
of Swimming-Associated Gastrointestinal Illness
Timothy J. Wade,1 Rebecca L. Calderon,1 Elizabeth Sams,1 Michael Beach,2 Kristen P. Brenner,3 Ann H. Williams,1
and Alfred P. Dufour 3
VOLUME 114 | NUMBER 1 | January 2006 ? Environmental Health Perspectives

you can find a presentation by Tim Wade on this at the National Beaches Conference:

I thought they had another paper too on these epi studies, but can't find it right now, you could contact the autors.

Bob/Clay: The best person to contact is Rebecca Calderon of EPA. She completed the first epi study at freshwater lake (Connecticut)
and reported it in "International Journal of Environmental Health Research 1:21-31, 1991. She should know what other studies have
been conducted since then. Roger

Hi all,

Some of you may have met Clay at the 2004 conference in San Diego. He runs
the SD county program and presented at the conference. He is finding himself
looking inland and hasn't really collected much on freshwater yet. Does
anyone have epi. studies or other freshwater specific health risk info to
share?

I don't know the particular watershed, or other impt details like
proximity of sewer infrastructure, storm drains, etc. But that may just
be icing on the cake. But just the wildlife alone could be an impact.
Here's a CDC on recreation water disease outbreaks (all freshwater
beaches) http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5308a1.htm

I'll wait for stuff from the Great Lakes folks.

He's a moron if water or people or wildlife can ever get into it, but
sure, I'll put you in touch with some of the Great Lakes BEACH Act
experts. What watershed? Don't you have like three of them in SD
county?

types of studies? Or other information specific to health risks to
swimmers in fresh water lakes? I need to the information to evaluate
statements made by a consultant that water contact is his proposed
freshwater lake would not present any health risks to swimmers. It is a
man made lake using well and imported fresh water.
