Welcome to one of the area's best-kept secrets, one recognized by the Clean Beaches Council as a "Blue Wave" beach. North Beach is one of only two beaches in the Midwest to get the national environmental group's seal of approval. Fewer than 60 beaches have been recognized nationally, with the vast majority in Florida. "The award means that the beach met very strict requirements in seven categories," said Carrie Collins, a council spokeswoman. "A large part of it was water quality, but safety, services, conservation, erosion and public education standards have to be met." Milwaukeeans are sea-green with envy. By comparison, 75 advisories were issued at Milwaukee's South Shore Beach, just 20 miles north as the gull flies. The city's premier beach, Bradford, had 38 advisories, one closure and many days when rotting Cladophera algae gave the beach a toilet-bowl aroma.
