All Northwest Indiana beaches on Lake Michigan will have regular tests for bacteria this summer; some will be tested every day. But the same test result at two different beaches could have different consequences. At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore beaches, such as West Beach in Portage, an “advisory” to swimmers will be the result of a high E. coli bacteria reading. But at some other beaches, such as Michigan City’s Washington Park beach or Gary’s Marquette Park beach, a similar test result will prompt the city’s park department to close the beach for swimming. Both policies are the result of thought and planning. But they reflect differing attitudes toward the commonly used test for E. coli bacteria — the bacteria that indicate (but don’t prove) the potential presence of sewage in the water.
