Thank you for commenting Steve.
I agree that we need to share more information. The email below and
attachment were added to the list serv on June 1 (a few days after the
news article that I posted 5/29/04).
Thank you for making a point of asking that members share more
information. I can't possibly keep up with the available information
and would greatly appreciate other member's input. The listserv is for
all of us to post information. I hope members please consider sharing
information that could be useful to all of us.
The attached file contains the abstracts of the studies that you
mentioned. Quick clarification: the composite samples were limited per
beach. Instead of collecting and testing 3 samples per beach, the study
collected and pooled the samples into one composite sample and tested
the one sample. Composite sampling may be useful for one beach at a
time and would never be useful for more than one beach.
Hope that helps clarify the information for you.

Attached you will find abstracts of poster presentations relating to
Great
Lakes recreational water quality that were presented at the American
Society of Microbiology meeting in New Orleans on May 24-27th. You
will
note quite a few familiar names. We are really lucky to have such a
strong
recreational water quality research community in the Great Lakes. I
think
it must be one of the strongest regional showings in the nation. Hope
the
participants and dialogs in GLBA helped catalyze and facilitate this
in
some small way. It's not too early to be planning your presentations
for
the Fall meeting of the Great Lakes Beach Association. Conference
planning
is underway, Shannon has been working us hard.
Special thanks to Murulee Byappanahali for assembling these abstracts.
