possible virus on the listserve

I am not an expert but it appears to me that there was (or is) a virus that got into the listserve at some point and used our address book to send out false messages (maybe copies of itself).  From what I learned, it could have come from any of the 300 plus members on the server.  I have been assured  by Christine Manninen or my own IT staff that these bogus messages will pose no danger to our computer systems unless they are opened.  Most of them are just byproducts of the virus attack.  Open only mail that appears to be legitimate GLBA business.  Of course, the most important thing for all of us is to update our virus software and then scan our drives before putting anything out on the listserve.  I have been assured that the list serve secruity and and functionality remains intact.
