Lake Ontario's health has improved greatly over the last 30 to 40 years, largely due to efforts to reduce the amount of phosphorus discharged into the lake, as well as stricter controls on sewage treatment plants.

Oswego County joins fight against turbines

Oswego County legislators followed the lead of Jefferson County in opposing an offshore wind-power project for eastern Lake Ontario. Legislators voted to support a resolution asking for the project not to come to waters near Oswego County.

Lake Ontario fishery "complicated" but thriving

2009 was a good year for fishermen in Lake Ontario, with catches in most species up from the year before — despite a lot of crazy stuff going on in the lake that can be traced back to the impact of invasive species.

Henderson channel dredging is close to approval
Watertown Daily Times (3/12)
Officials have less than three weeks to clear the channel between Snowshoe Bay and Lake Ontario. The area must be dredged by April 1, so as not to interfere with the beginning of the spawning season for brown trout and steelhead trout.

New York Power Authority hears message, won't locate wind turbines in Lake Ontario near Oswego, Jefferson counties
The Syracuse Post-Standard (3/11)
It appears no wind turbines will be built in Lake Ontario off Oswego and Jefferson counties. New York Power Authority President Richard M. Kessel said if Oswego and Jefferson counties don’t want the project, it won’t be built there.

County rejects offshore turbines
Watertown Daily Times (3/10)
Jefferson County legislators voted 14-0 against offshore wind power development in Lake Ontario after officials from New York Power Authority argued the benefits of having a development in the area.
