DNR: Property owners need permit to clean up lakefront

Lakefront property owners battling exposed beach, shorelines and wetlands due to lower water levels of Lake Michigan can find land management advice to protect wildlife habitat and water quality from the Department of Natural Resources.

Threatened turtle turned up by cottager-funded Ont. lake study
CBC News (8/25)
A healthy population of threatened stinkpot turtles has been found in an eastern Ontario lake as a result of a study partly funded by local cottagers. The study is has also found patches of invasive plants such as Eurasian millfoil and purple loosestrife.

DNR grants available for landowners to help rare plants and animals

The Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for the Landowner Incentive Program, which gives assistance to landowners who agree to manage their property to benefit rare and threatened plants and animals.

Survey indicates wolf range, population similar to 2004

Minnesota’s gray wolf population has changed little in the past 10 years, according to a recent survey by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

This week, the interior secretary, Dirk Kempthorne, proposed a regulatory overhaul of the Endangered Species Act that would eliminate the requirement for independent scientific reviews of any project that could harm an endangered species living on federal land.

Events
Kirtland's Warbler Festival
Celebrate the gradual return of the endangered Kirtland's Warbler and its home in the Jack Pine and AuSable River ecosystem. Kirtland Community College, named for the rare bird, is the host site for the festival, eight miles north of St. Helen, Mich.

Kirtland's Warbler Tours
Guided tours to Kirtland's warbler nesting areas (from May-June) will depart from the U.S. Forest Service Office in Mio, Mich., and from the Holiday Inn in Grayling, Mich.
